Congressman Mo Brooks Introduces Mandatory E-Verify Bill to Eliminate Illegal Alien Jobs Magnet
Washington, DC— Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-05) introduced the “Accountability Through Electronic Verification Act.” The bill would permanently reauthorize the E-Verify program and make its use mandatory.
Background: The E-Verify system is a quick and effective way for employers to confirm they are not hiring illegal aliens. Currently, E-Verify use is voluntary for most employers, although some states mandate its use (including Alabama). E-Verify is the most effective deterrent to illegal immigration because it shuts off one of the main pull factors to illegal immigration, off the books jobs for illegal aliens. Making E-Verify mandatory would prevent the hiring of illegal immigrants and reinforce existing immigration laws that prohibit the employment of illegal workers.
Congressman Brooks said, “The prospect of a job entices illegal aliens to break into America. Making E-Verify mandatory for all companies coupled with harsh penalties for violations cuts off illegal aliens from American jobs. The result? Fewer illegal aliens to take jobs from and suppress the wages of American workers. Which equates to higher pay and more jobs for Americans. An added bonus is that illegal aliens who can’t get jobs will self-deport at no cost to taxpayers. That is a great deal for all Americans! This bill is a no-brainer.”
Highly influential immigration policy reform groups, NumbersUSA and the Federation for American Immigration Reform, support the bill.
Dan Stein, President of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, said, “Congressman Mo Brooks is, without question, one of the most prolific advocates of true immigration reform in Congress. The Accountability Through Electronic Verification Act would authorize and expand the E-Verify program, making it mandatory for all employers in the United States. This is the gold standard of immigration enforcement, and would reduce illegal immigration by turning off the jobs magnet that lures illegal aliens. This bill attacks the source of the problem, rather than its symptoms. We applaud Congressman Brooks and urge every one of his colleagues to cosponsor.”
Rosemary Jenks, Director of Government Relations at NumbersUSA, said, "Of all the tools available to stop the flow of illegal immigration, E-Verify is the most effective, since most illegal aliens are coming here to work. That's why it's no surprise that Congressman Brooks has consistently fought to implement the program nationwide. E-Verify gives employers a free and easy way to be certain that their employees are legally authorized to work, and it prevents illegal aliens from accessing the jobs that American citizens and legal immigrants so desperately need, particularly now, as the economy recovers from the pandemic. NumbersUSA applauds Congressman Brooks for introducing the Accountability Through Electronic Verification Act to ensure that American workers don’t have to compete for jobs with illegal aliens."
