Brooks Votes to Kill Open-Borders, Socialist Democrat Spending Bonanza President Trump Has Promised to Veto

June 20, 2019
Press Release

Washington, DC— Wednesday afternoon, Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-05) voted “No” on H.R. 2740, the massive 667-page, nearly-$1 trillion Socialist Democrat spending bill.

Congressman Brooks said the following:

“This $1 trillion, four-bill package is a financially reckless cavalcade of calamitous open borders and socialist policies the Republican Senate won’t accept and President Trump has already promised to veto.[1] The bill is an unserious partisan, political statement.”

“America’s deficits and accumulated national debt pose a dangerous threat to our country. Yet, House Socialist Democrats are hellbent on spending more money America doesn’t have, has to borrow to get, and cannot afford to pay back. Socialist Democrats’ financial recklessness was on full display when 226 of them voted to pass the massive 667-page, nearly-$1 trillion spending bill. My question to Socialist Democrats: if deficits and debt don’t matter, why stop at $1 trillion? Why do Socialist Democrats not spend $10 trillion, $20 trillion, $30 trillion?”

“The reality is, deficits and debt matter. According to the Congressional Budget Office (“CBO”), the federal budget deficit will be $897 billion in FY 2019 ($118 billion worse than in FY 2018) and is set to embark on a string of $1 trillion+ deficits beginning in 2022. Because of persistently large deficits, the national debt is projected to ‘grow steadily, reaching 93 percent of GDP in 2029 (its highest level since just after World War II) and about 150 percent of GDP in 2049—far higher than it has ever been.’ By 2029, CBO predicts the budget deficit will be $1.4 trillion.[2]”

“On top of irresponsible spending, open-borders Socialist Democrats use this spending bill to prohibit funding for border barriers or security infrastructure. Further, the bill prohibits the Department of Defense from using Section 284 counter-drug authorities to construct fences that will block drug smuggling corridors.”

“Also bad, the bill provides more than twice as much additional funding for welfare programs than for defense programs (the #1 priority of the federal government). Concerningly, the bill funds Defense Department research and development at $2.2 billion below the President’s request and it provides insufficient funding to support and modernize our nation’s nuclear deterrent, among other bad things too numerous to list.”

“If enacted, the open-borders Socialist Democrat spending bill would do great damage to our country. Socialist Democrats should stop playing extreme partisan politics and come to the negotiating table.”
